Facebook bans fake 265 accounts which were spreading fake political news. The fake news was creating a bad atmosphere among many nations’ politicians, especially of Africa and also of Southeast Asia and Latin America. The majority of the accounts also had a connection with an Israeli based social media company.
Facebook reported the accounts were on Facebook and Instagram. And involved in a “coordinated inauthentic behaviour”.
Social media sites are often used as a platform to create discourse among people. But Facebook taking action specifically against the Archimedes group is new.
Archimedes group, located in Tel Aviv, intents to use any source as a source to alter reality according to the wishes of their clients.
Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of global cybersecurity says that the reason behind the ban of accounts is not the content or pages that it created, rather the ”coordinated inauthentic behaviour”, it showed:
Facebook bans fake Accounts
As in other cases involving coordinated inauthentic behavior, the individuals behind this activity coordinated with one another to mislead others about who they were and what they were doing, and that was the basis for our action.
Gleicher said the people behind the fake accounts, operated pages, spread misleading information and boasted fake engagements. They even lied about being a local news organization. Their contents focused on leaked political information.
The Archimedes group got banned on Facebook and Instagram. They got the cease warning too.
Before the ban, Archimedes had several accounts, pages, and groups where they posted about politics, elections, and criticism of politicians. Mainly Targeting African nations of Nigeria, Senegal, Angola, Niger, and Tunisia, along with Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Also, do you have any fake accounts? 😛
