History of the Kargil war 1999:
Kargil war 1999 : In the winters of 1998-1999 the Pakistani armed force was secretively giving training and infiltrating groups of terrorists into Indian side of Line Of Control (LOC). They named this infiltration as “Operation Badr”. The main motive behind this Pakistani infiltration was to compel the Indian armed forces to withdraw from the Siachen Glacier. Consequently forcing India to settle and negotiate in the prolonged Kashmir issue. Furthermore, another suspectable reason behind this incursion was that Pakistan wanted to boost the pace of long rebellion which has been occurring from more than decade in the Indian State of Kashmir by taking a pro-active role.
Initially the Indian armed forces of the region thought them as Jihadis and declared that they would soon evict them away. Within few weeks of infiltration, they found out that the it has taken place on a large scale. As a result , the Indian armed forced retaliated with “Operation Vijay” to tackle down the terrorists. The war came to an end on July 26 1999 thus marking the date as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’.
Since then, the Kargill Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year to honor the martyred soldiers of the war.
Take a look below at what the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi has to say on this auspicious day :
During the Kargil War in 1999, I had the opportunity to go to Kargil and show solidarity with our brave soldiers.
This was the time when I was working for my Party in J&K as well as Himachal Pradesh.
The visit to Kargil and interactions with soldiers are unforgettable.
